INTRODUCTION

Rosenshine suggests that effective teachers break down concepts and procedures into small steps to deal with the limitations of working memory and provide opportunities for students to practice each step while providing support through modelling and scaffolding.

Teachers must analyse their curriculum material to see how it can be broken down, and instructional methods must be distinct from curriculum content.

This approach is used in teaching sports and dance, where skills are developed step-by-step to ensure success and assimilation into the whole.
